This past weekend marked the beginning of Team Soul Barbell’s 2021 competition year or season. We had the privilege of competing at our good friend, Carl Penney’s, yearly weightlifting competition, Palm Beach Open. PBO has become not only a staple in our competition calendar but also one of the major meets in all of South Florida. For me, this was the first meet I have been able to coach at since the 2019 American Open in Park City Utah. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as a meet like PBO can be a mixed bag of coaches, athletes, teams, etc. Meets like these can run the gamut from World Team Members to a 9 year old taking their first lifts on a competition platform. To be quite honest… That is a very good representation of our team at the moment and it showed this weekend. One of the reasons...

Well team… Here we go. I want to come out and say that the last 2 years of the CrossFit Games Season have been less than exciting for me personally. I feel it’s important for me to come out and say that so everyone knows where I am coming from. We have always felt like it is important to be transparent with our athletes, clients and followers so they have a better understanding of where we are and where we want to go. There’s a variety of reasons and if you really want to know… Look at some of our older blog posts, youtube videos, podcasts, posts on social media, etc. Something that has always been our guiding light so to speak is planning. Because of this a few of these people have reached out and asked to see how we program for our general population in order to compare it to the programming that has led them to injury. I’ll get to injury prevention soon, but first I want to provide you with a snapshot of what the programming process looks like for our general population Soul. The foundation for much of what we do comes from our Team Soul Training program that you can subscribe to on SugarWOD. From there I take time to adapt and make specific changes for our everyday clients. This altered TST program is what we call our MAINSITE program or what other gyms might call their “RX WOD”. The goal of...

I spent the majority of my adolescent, teen and young adult life in punk and hardcore shows in Miami, FL. The typical show was filled with a mix of cultures, genders and backgrounds. When I opened Soul in 2010, I had some work experience, but much of my formative years were spent in the DIY/hardcore culture. I say this because I want you to understand that my opinions on life and experiences are mostly framed by my upbringing as a middle class Cuban American male in Miami and someone who was heavily involved in the South FL scene of hardcore and punk rock shows. As a result, racism is not something I have dealt with much personally. I have had some experiences, but they aren’t even worth mentioning… When I opened Soul, I wanted my gym to feel more like a hardcore show than most stuffy ass gyms I had been...
